3PL

Having your own business can be very fulfilling but also brings with it a whole truckload of responsibilities and new worries. While keeping a business going in a single town or area is easy enough, there comes a time when it becomes necessary to expand the business and to head forth to new frontiers. One of the biggest problems with expanding a business, especially out of a small area is logistics. The price of building the infrastructure to transport your goods to where it needs to be is quite steep and many businesses do not consider expansion simply because of this problem. But there is no reason to worry about it at the start since third party logistics (3PL) can help you to expand in small amounts while you collect the capital necessary for a total expansion.

The easiest way is to go through a third party logistics provider. A 3PL provider is a firm or company that specializes in the handling the logistics, that is the transport, of another company either to a small degree or completely. The 3PL is outsourced to handle another company’s supply chain management thereby removing the responsibility and some of the cost from the outsourcing company. Some providers even offer warehouse services along with the basic transport services as well as a range of other options that can be customized for the outsourcing company’s benefit. What this means is that you can expand your business and get your products to other places and let someone else handle the problems of how to get the products where they are going.

Depending on your needs, there are four ‘types’, as it were of 3PL providers. Each one offers a differing amount of service and coverage. The most basic type of 3PL provider is the standard 3PL provider. The services include packing, picking up the goods, warehouse, storage and distribution. Firms that offer this type of 3PL often have other interests as well. A service developer 3PL provider will offer all the basics but also offer value added service like tracking, security, specific packaging and a range of other technical services. Firms that offer this often have a high degree of IT expertise and complex systems for tracking.

The final two types of 3PL providers are the customer adapter and the customer developer. In the first case the provider comes at the behest of the customer and changes the customer’s logistics by adding, streamlining and generally enhancing their logistic capabilities. In the second case the provider comes in and literally takes over the customer’s logistics essentially becoming, as it were, part of the customer company. They take over all activities and processes as far as logistics are concerned.

With the help of 3PL provider even your business can expand to new frontiers. Outsourcing the logistic responsibility does not have to last forever but a good relationship with a 3PL provider could be all your business needs to expand to new heights. While you focus on making your business an even greater success, the 3PL provider will ensure that your goods reach your customers when they want it no matter where they want it.
